In this talk I will give a broad overview of my research interests centering on the realization of symmetries in quantum field theories and quantum gravity. In particular, I will explain the appearance of generalized global symmetries in field theory setups and their fate after the inclusion of spacetime dynamics. This approach leads to universal consistency conditions, with consequences for string theory but also phenomenological setups.
